Georgia – The Cradle of Viticulture

Georgian Heritage Foundation Lecture Series Continues: Georgia – The Cradle of Viticulture

Within the framework of the Georgian Heritage Foundation Diaspora Diplomacy Program, we are pleased to continue our GHF Lecture Series in collaboration with the City of San Jose, bringing the lecture “Georgia: The Cradle of Viticulture” to the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library.

 Saturday, February 21
 1:00pm- 2:30pm
King Library Digital Humanities Center (Room 113)

This immersive lecture will be presented in two complementary parts, offering both intellectual depth and cultural storytelling.

The program will open with an introduction by Liana Nitsetskaia, exploring Georgia’s ancient wine heritage through the academic and cultural lens of Lado Uzunashvili, Master of Winemaking. Drawing from his lecture at the University of Melbourne, and supported by his 195-year-old family lineage in winemaking, this portion reflects original research and intellectual property graciously shared by Mr. Uzunashvili to help popularize Georgian wine culture globally.

The lecture will then continue with a deeper historical and geographical exploration led by Giorgi Surmanidze, co-founder of Qvevri Wine Georgia. With extensive experience in agriculture and viticulture - including his service as Minister of Agriculture of the Adjara Region, Georgia - Mr. Surmanidze will guide participants through traditional winemaking methods, regional diversity, and the enduring significance of qvevri culture.

This will be a fully interactive, multisensory experience, engaging the senses of sight, taste, smell, sound, and feeling, offering attendees a rare opportunity to connect with Georgia’s living wine heritage in an intimate and educational setting.

We look forward to welcoming you for an afternoon of culture, history, and shared discovery.
